Nashua, New Hampshire Elder Law Resources

As the Baby Boomer generation marches toward their retirement years, the number of older Americans continues to increase exponentially. In fact, experts tell us that by the year 2050, older Americans (age and older) will outnumber their younger counterparts (age 21 and younger) for the first time in history. With more and more seniors in the U.S., issues that impact them have gained in importance. Fortunately, that often means there are more resources available to help the elderly and those who care for them with those issues. To take advantage of those resources, however, you must know where to find them. With that in mind, the attorneys and staff at DeBruyckere Law Offices have put together some Nashua, New Hampshire elder law resources for you that you may find helpful. If you have specific questions involving any legal issues that impact seniors, or their caregivers, please feel free to contact our office to make an appointment with one of our elder law attorneys.

Government Offices and Law Enforcement

One of the first places you should look to for help as a resident of Nashua is the city’s website. On the website, you will find city services listings with phone numbers and address. The city’s website is full of helpful links, phone numbers and “How to” information. The City of Nashua’s law enforcement needs are serviced by the City of Nashua Police Department and/or the Hillsborough County Sherriff’s Department.

Hospitals and Clinics

Seniors typically require frequent doctor and hospital visits, whether for preventative care and check-ups, or for emergency care. If you are a resident of Nashua, New Hampshire, there are several medical centers/hospitals to choose from for routine and/or emergency medical care. St. Joseph’s Hospital, located in Nashua, offers both routine and emergency care. Southern New Hampshire Health is another option for both routine and emergency medical care. There may come a time when you, or your loved one, requires the care that can only be provided by a nursing home or other long-term care facility. In and around Nashua, a few of the options include Genesis Center, Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation, and Benchmark Senior Living.  At some point in time, you may also need to qualify for Medicaid to help the high cost of that care.

Leisure Time

Nashua seniors are fortunate to have the Nashua Senior Activity Center that offers recreational, educational, and wellness activities for seniors age 50 and older. If you, or your loved one, is a veteran, the Nashua Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 483 is a popular place to gather and socialize.

State and Federal Assistance Programs

An excellent all around elder law resource to have handy is the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (NHDHHS), Bureau of Elderly and Adult Services. The BEAS provides a variety of social and long-term supports to adults age 60 and older. If you are concerned that an elderly loved one is the victim of abuse or neglect, or you are a victim yourself, contact the NHDHHS Adult Protection. The State of New Hampshire also has an excellent Family Caregiver Support Services program for caregivers who need assistance.

Many seniors also qualify for assistance from the Social Security disability or retirement program. For information on Social Security disability benefits, visit the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) website. Information about your Social Security retirement benefits can also be found on the website. If you are a veteran, or the surviving spouse or dependent of a veteran, you may also be entitled to a number of benefits through the Veteran’s Administration. Once you reach retirement age, you will likely be automatically enrolled in the Medicare program. Although basic Medicare is free to all seniors, Medicare actually has four parts and the other three parts may come with a premium. Additional resources aimed specifically at helping the elderly on the federal government’s Eldercare Directory.

Testimonials

I felt complete trust and confidence in Dan DeBruyckere and his staff. They have a caring, low-key approach and there is no pressure to add products to the estate plan; rather he makes me aware of changes in the law, etc. I always learn something new to assist me in our planning!
