Swampscott, Massachusetts
Approximately 15 miles up the coast from Boston you will find the town of Swampscott, Massachusetts. Located in Essex County, Swampscott covers almost seven square miles and was home to 13,787 residents at the time of the 2010 Census.
Prior to the arrival of European settlors, Native Americans known as the Naumkeags inhabited the area they referred to as “land of the red rock” which would eventually become the town of Swampscott. The name “Swampscott,” in fact, comes from the Native American language and means “red rock.” In 1629, Francis Ingalls came and built the first Massachusetts Bay Colony tannery on Humphrey’s Brook, officially making Swampscott part of Lynn’s Ward One. Initially, Swampscott was primarily a fishing village, with one in three residents being involved in the fishing trade. In fact, Swampscott was put on the map in the early years off the 19th century when Ebenezer Thorndike invented the lobster pot and revolutionized the harvesting of lobster worldwide. The Swampscott Dory, a fishing boat still in use throughout the world today, was also invented in the town in 1840.
Swampscott separated from Lynn, and was officially incorporated, in 1852. As a beach town not far from Boston, Swampscott grew to become a favorite vacation destination of the wealthy. Grand hotels and resorts were built in the town during the 19th century, some of which are still standing today and are listed on the National Historic Register.
Today, Swampscott remains a fairly affluent community with beautiful neighborhoods and stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean nearby. Although Swampscott remains a relatively small community, the dining, shopping, and entertainment options offered by larger cities are all available just a short drive away in Boston.

Your initial estate plan will undoubtedly be rather simplistic, consisting of nothing more than a simple Last Will and Testament in many cases. It may not be long, however, before that plan need to be expanded to encompass your growing family. A spouse and/or child will prompt you to consider adding incapacity planning to your estate plan as well as to make beneficiary and fiduciary changes to your plan. You may also decide to create a trust t protect the inheritance you plan to leave your minor children. As your estate assets increase in value, asset protection and retirement planning may need to be included in your estate plan. Looking into the future may also prompt you to consider the high cost of long-term care and the need for Medicaid planning within your estate plan. Strong feelings with regard to end of life care may necessitate the addition of an advance directive while a funeral and burial planning component will ensure that your wishes are honored after you are gone.
