Manchester, New Hampshire

Located in south central New Hampshire in the County of Hillsborough, Manchester covers approximately 35 square miles. With a population of 109,565 as of the 2010 Census, Manchester is the most populous city in the state of New Hampshire and the largest city in northern New England. It is also one of two seats of Hillsborough County (along with Nashua), the state of New Hampshire’s most populous county.

Originally called Namaoskeag, meaning “good fishing place” by the Pennacook Indians who once lived in the area, it was renamed several times before receiving its current name of Manchester. It was granted by Massachusetts in 1727 as Tyngstown to veterans of Queen Anne’s War who served in 1703 under Captain William Tyng. That grant was ruled invalid, however, upon New Hampshire’s 1741 separation from Massachusetts. After that, Governor Benning Wentworth re-chartered the town in 1751 as “Derryfield”. In 1807, the town was finally given the name “Manchester” by the merchant and inventor Samuel Blodgett (after whom Samuel Blodget Park and Blodget Street in Manchester’s North End are named). Blodget’s vision was to create a great industrial center similar to that of the original Manchester in England, which was the world’s first industrialized city.

In 1809, Benjamin Prichard and others built a cotton spinning mill operated by water power on the western bank of the Merrimack. The mill was incorporated as the Amoskeag Cotton & Woolen Manufacturing Company not long thereafter and in 1831 incorporated once again as the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company. On the eastern bank, Amoskeag engineers and architects planned a model company town, founded in 1838 with Elm Street as its main thoroughfare. Incorporated as a city in 1846, Manchester became home to the largest cotton mill in the world—Mill No. 11, stretching 900 feet long by 103 feet wide, and containing 4,000 looms. The rapid growth of the mills demanded a large influx of workers, resulting in a flood of immigrants, particularly French Canadians.

In 2015, CNNMoney.com ranked Manchester #1 in the U.S. for small businesses, and in 2009, another site ranked Manchester 13th in a list of the 100 best cities in the U.S. to live and launch a business.  In addition, Kiplinger voted Manchester the second most tax-friendly city in the U.S., second only to Anchorage, Alaska. Also in 2009, Forbes magazine ranked the Manchester region first on its list of “America’s 100 Cheapest Places to Live.” According to the Equality of Opportunity Project, released in 2013, Manchester ranked as the seventh best metropolitan area in the U.S. in terms of upward income mobility and in 2014, Forbes magazine ranked the city among the top 5 most educated cities in the United States.

The estate planning attorneys at DeBruyckere Law Offices are proud to serve the estate planning needs of the Manchester, New Hampshire community. Our goal is to create lifelong relationships with our clients who live and work in the Manchester community because estate planning, when done properly, is a lifelong process. As you move through the various stages of your life, and your estate becomes more complicated and complex, changes will need to be made to your estate plan in order to keep up. We hope to be there with you to ensure those changes are accounted for in your estate plan.

A successful estate plan requires a solid foundation; however, it also requires nurturing. Consequently, your estate plan is not something you create and forget about once it is in place. Instead, your estate plan is something that will need to be reviewed and updated throughout the course of your life as your estate and your family grows. Initially, your focus may be on nothing more than ensuring you do not leave behind an intestate estate should something happen to you.  As such, a Last Will and Testament may be all you need in the beginning. Deciding to marry and/or become a parent, however, will change that as you now have a family to protect and provide for in your plan. At that point, you may decide to create a trust to protect your minor child’s inheritance, for example, as well as incorporate incapacity planning into your overall plan.  As you move into middle age, you should begin merging your retirement plans with your estate plan to ensure that the two plans work in harmony with each other. Long before you reach retirement age, however, you should also consider adding Medicaid planning to your estate plan to ensure that you can afford the high cost of long-term care. Funeral planning along with advance directives should also be included in your overall estate plan if you want your wishes to be honored with regard to end of life medical treatment.

DeBruyckere Law Offices our goal is to be with you every step of the way along your life’s journey. By developing a life-long relationship with you we believe we are able to do much more to protect you, your assets and your loved ones.

I felt complete trust and confidence in Dan DeBruyckere and his staff. They have a caring, low-key approach and there is no pressure to add products to the estate plan; rather he makes me aware of changes in the law, etc. I always learn something new to assist me in our planning!
